Tuesday Blog – Small and Spanish please

I don’t quite know how scouting works in modern-day football but I do know a shortcut that pretty much all teams should be utilising. Simply request a player who is small and Spanish and I reckon you’ve got a pretty good chance of finding a quality player.

The Premier League is full of fantastic players but it is no surprise that three of its top performers meet the above criteria. David Silva, Santi Cazorla and Juan Mata have been a joy to watch since arriving in England and their respective clubs of Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are very lucky to have them. While none of them were particularly cheap acquisitions they were still great value in today’s market. They all came from Spanish sides out with the big two, but you must wonder why Barcelona and Real Madrid never came calling? Maybe the squads of both teams are of such quality that they simply would not be able to accommodate them. Also, with Valencia and Malaga facing financial difficulties in recent years they were forced to sell their players quickly and on the cheap rather than hold on to them. An ideal situation for any interested English clubs.

So who is the next bargain ready to be snapped up?

One name that sprung to my mind was young Malaga starlet Isco. He is certainly one I will be keeping an eye on this season and you can be sure the top sides in the English Premier League will be too!

Are you a fan of La Liga? Are there any more Spanish bargains to be had? What about the other leagues? Tweet us your bargain @talkingbaws or comment below.
